As a coach, there’s much you can do to instill competitiveness in your athletes. For individuals, the first step is to make them feel welcome. Encourage them to try new skills and applaud them when they do, even if they make errors.

To inspire your team as a whole, run practices that force them to up their intensity. Some tactics you can use include:

  • Picking up the speed of practice to promote hustle
  • Setting up challenges that pit player against player
  • Employing a time clock to keep players focused on a goal
  • Offer rewards for hard work

Fostering competitiveness in your athletes takes time, but developing a desire to win will pay dividends down the line.
